Exhibition title: Until Now
Artist: Guerra de la Paz
Exhibition dates: May 24 – July 14, 2012
Exhibition space: Philip J. Steele gallery
This exhibition was the first solo exhibition of artists Guerra de la Paz (GDLP) in Denver, Colorado. Cuban born American artists Alain Guerra and Neraldo de la Paz are the collaborative duo that composes Guerra de la Paz. The artists often gather materials from rag trades, discarded waste from second hand stores, and from donations. By using a material we are all familiar with—clothing—the artists offer aesthetic and critical looks at our relationship with the environment and with our communities. The act of viewing the work of GDLP has been described as a kind of ‘archaeology;’ their work engages with the history inherent in common debris and its possibilities for recycled usage. The artists explain that their relationship with recycled materials allows them to “explore ways to reinvent themes and classic icons while still commenting on contemporary culture.” This exhibition consisted of several loaned works as well as a site specific installation.
