Press Play explores the way contemporary artists reflect on the interconnectedness of digital media and entertainment. The 12 local, national, and international artists in this exhibition evoke familiar digital media – from video games to corporate identities – in their work as a way to expand, criticize, or reflect on our relationship with games, technology, and how these various interfaces both reflect and affect behavior. This exhibition focuses on artworks that involve direct interaction, such as interactive webpages, video game modifications, and communication devices, and on works that establish a behavioral or intellectual connection with the viewer. The works range from new commissions created in 2015 to older works from the late '90s and early '00s, when net art and game modifications emerged as a new medium of artistic expression. The prevalence of these types of artwork throughout the past couple decades highlight the importance of considering the impact this technology has on our society. Whether openly and actively, or in more subtle, subliminal ways, the constructed reality of digital media frames our understanding of the world and our place in it.
