Roger Herman was born in 1947 in the Saarland, Germany. He studied at the illustrious Kunstakademie in Karlsruhe, Germany. He moved to San Francisco, California in 1976 on a fellowship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Starting in 1981, he has lived and worked in Los Angles. In 1985 he was appointed to the painting faculty of the school of art at the University of California at Los Angeles.
Herman has exhibited in many national museums including the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, P.S.1 in New York, and the Walker Art Museum in Philadelphia. Herman is also the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship Grant in Painting. He has also had extensive museum exhibitions in California at the Los Angeles County Museum, the La Jolla Museum and the Santa Monica Museum.
